Born of Salt & Sand
Bede’s story begins on Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island, QLD), where the days were marked by tides, sea breezes, and an intimate freedom only island living can offer.
“I was super fortunate to grow up on Straddie,” he says. “It was the perfect upbringing. So natural and full of this great community. Everyone knew everyone. There were only around 800 people on the island.”
By eight, Bede was riding the coastline solo, always knowing someone, either a neighbour or cousin, had eyes on the beach. “You were never really alone. The whole island helped raise you.” With no skateparks or shopping strips, the beach was the centre of everything. “Everyone surfed. It wasn’t a scene or a status thing, it’s just what you did. A part of life.”
The Wave as a Way Through
As a teen, while Bede got into touch football when he was on the mainland, it was surfing that stuck. “I won my first comp on the Gold Coast at around 12 and I was instantly hooked,” he says. “I loved that it challenged me physically, and mentally too.”
Bede was 18 when he began competing on the World Qualifying Series (WQS). He qualified for the World Championship Tour (WCT) in 2005, at age 22. From there, everything shifted: sponsorships, world travel, pressure, and sacrifice.
"I really looked up to other Australian surfers, and once the dream started to develop, I just started chasing it. I worked and trained hard, made sacrifices, and put everything into it. And it paid off."
Bede worked his way up the world rankings, eventually landing second on the world tour. “I never got the world title. But that wasn’t the point. I wanted to honour where I came from. Show that a kid from a small island could make it.”
That competitive drive still lingers, but it’s quieter and more community-focused.
"My favourite thing about surfing, that’s carried me through my professional career, and especially now, is that surfing is just such a big worldwide community. It brings so many people together. For fun, fitness, travelling, and just wellbeing."
Coming Home: Coaching, Family, and Cold Beers
In 2015, Bede suffered a serious injury during the Pipeline Masters in Hawaii. A wipeout on a powerful wave that fractured his pelvis in two places and tore his abdominal muscles. He underwent major surgery, and for months, faced the very real fear that he might never walk again.
As he slowly healed and began thinking about life beyond competition, Bede co-founded Balter Brewing with a crew of mates (including professional surfers Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson and Josh Kerr).
What started as a dream to develop a beer that reflected that relaxed post-surf spirit became one of Australia’s most beloved breweries. “It wasn’t about chasing scale,” Bede says. “It was about genuine people and great flavour”.
He returned briefly to tour, but it wasn’t long before his focus shifted to something bigger, helping shape Australia’s national surf team as part of the Olympic coaching program. Bede became a steady influence on the world stage, even coaching other Straddie-local professionals such as Ethan Ewing.
Still, his energy has always remained close to home. These days, you’ll find him at Currumbin Alley Board Riders club and Lindisfarne School’s surf academy, mentoring rising talent with the same grounded values he learned on Straddie - humility, optimism, and a respect for the ocean as the ultimate teacher.
“My appreciation has grown even more for how surfing connects people to nature,” he says. “It’s just you and the wave. A moment that’s fully yours, and I love how fast-changing it is. You could be at the same place, but it looks totally different the next hour or even the next day.”
To this day, with all the waves and beaches he’s surfed, Stradbroke Island remains a close favourite. “It’s still so raw and untouched.”
For Bede, there’s nowhere like the stretch of coastline between Southeast Queensland and Northern NSW. With its flawless point breaks, impeccable sand flow, and alluring weather, it’s a magnet for surfers the world over, and his personal paradise.
Surf Safari: A Journey Shared
The Surf Safari experience was the natural next chapter. Bede’s partnership with Reveling began with a conversation with its founders, Alex and Drew, and the trio clicked instantly. “We were in stitches the first time we met,” he says. “It felt easy. We all just cared about the same things and shared the same values - connection, showcasing landscapes, and sharing Indigenous culture”.
Together, they crafted the Surf Safari: an insider’s journey through Minjerribah, Moreton Island, and the surrounding coastlines. It wasn’t just about riding waves. It’s about tuning into place, sharing slow moments, and experiencing these regions deeply.
“It doesn’t feel like work,” Bede says. “It’s just me showing people what I love.”

One recent guest joined the Safari from the US. “He was so humble and appreciative,” Bede recalls. “It was so special to open up the island to people in this way - the culture, the nature, the food, the wildlife. Showing the little hidey holes only locals know. I want people to experience the best this region has to offer. And I think my passion for it comes through. They feel that.”

I hope every guest leaves feeling like they’ve truly felt that region.” For Bede, the Surf Safari brings everything full circle, from island beginnings to international contests and back again.
“Coaching is about teaching,” he says. “But this is just sharing. That’s the part I love.”
