Framed by Nature: Behind the Lens with Craig Parry

date
written by

Craig Parry is one of Australia’s most celebrated ocean and wildlife photographers. Based in Lennox Head, his work has featured on National Geographic, Disney+, and Discovery Channel - capturing everything from breaching whales to the quiet geometry of reef light.

But behind the acclaim is a slower story. One shaped by early surf sessions, long hours in nature, and a deep, instinctive connection to the wild.

We sat down with Craig ahead of our Framed by Nature safaris to explore the philosophy behind the lens — what fuels his work, why he asks guests to pause before they shoot, and how a life shaped by light becomes something worth sharing.

“”

“Photography, for me, has never been about the perfect shot. It’s about presence. The wild has a rhythm — and when you feel it, everything clicks. That’s what these journeys are about.”

Craig Parry - Framed by Nature

Chasing Light, Telling Stories

Tell us about the beginning — where did your connection to nature and photography come from?

I grew up in Lennox Head, so nature was always just there. For my whole family, the ocean was a big part of our life. I started surfing at six, and we spent so much time at the beach or in the water. My mum and dad were both ocean lovers. Dad also loved photography, so that rubbed off on me early.

I think the turning point was when I was about eight years old and my aunty gave me a disposable underwater film camera. We were at the Barrier Reef and she said, “Don’t waste the film.” I swam off and used the whole roll on a turtle twenty metres below.

The photos were just blue... no turtle at all! But that moment really stuck.

How did that early interest grow into your career?

I started taking photos seriously as a teenager — mostly surf stuff, then landscapes. I went into weddings and portraits for a while because that’s what paid the bills, but I always had this goal of working with National Geographic. It took years, but I eventually got there.

I’ve since worked on some amazing projects like the Limitless series on Disney+ with Chris Hemsworth, and now I get to travel and photograph wildlife — which is what I’ve always wanted to do.

One moment I’ll never forget was when a whale swam underneath my paddleboard. I had my camera, but my settings were wrong and the shot didn’t work. Fully out of focus. Still, that experience made me realise: this is what I want to feel and I what I want to capture, and I want to do it properly.

A Deepening Presence

Your photos are known for embodying a deeply thoughtful and quiet presence. What draws you in when you’re shooting?

It's light, always. That’s what I’m chasing. Not just bright sunsets or golden hour, but the way light shapes mood and story. Overcast days are my favourite because everything softens. You get mood and contrast and depth.

I’m not looking for the biggest spectacle - but I love noticing those small shifts — how water moves, or the way a shadow curves across sand dunes. You’ve got to slow down and let those things reveal themselves. The camera helps me do that.

Now that you're bringing other's into your creative process..what is it like to lead others through your world?

Ah, it’s really special. I keep the group small — ten people max— so we can stay connected to the moment. It’s not about gear or getting the “perfect shot.” It’s about seeing. Feeling. I always ask guests to put their camera down first. Take a breath, look around, listen. Once you do that, the light starts showing you things.

We’ll go out at sunrise, walk through the forest, snorkel the reef — but the real shift happens when people start slowing their pace. They start to see differently. You really notice that shift in energy.

Attentive Journeys

What’s one moment from past safaris that’s stayed with you?

There was one morning photographing at Lady Elliot Island where the water was completely still — glassy. Everyone was standing quietly, and then the sun broke over the reef and lit everything up. Coral glowing orange, fish moving like shadows. I just said, “Watch how the light traces form.” Everyone lifted their cameras at the same time, but no one spoke. It was this shared, quiet moment of awe.

That’s the kind of thing I want people to experience. Not just to photograph, but to feel it.

How have you seen guests chance on experiences like these?

They start more focused on the gear or the shot — but by day three or four, they’re slowing down, looking around more. They’re present. Some of them don’t even take their cameras out for a while. They’re just sitting with the light, waiting. I think photography teaches you that — how to be in the moment, and how to listen better.

The Experience: Framed by Nature Safaris

Is this presence, intention and change something you wish to embody in Framed by Nature?

Yes, exactly. These are not tours where you snap a couple of shots and leave - It's actually this incredible blend of travel, intention, mindfulness, and nature. A way of connecting with a tool to help you dothat. Amidst the busyness of everything, learning to move through the world a little more slowly. You leave with images, definitely, but also with a new way of seeing. That’s the real gift.

Two Framed by Nature safaris are now open — one focused on K’Gari and the reef, the other through the Gold Coast and Northern Rivers. What makes each of these special?

I love how these experiences have distinctly different rhythms. Both are beautiful, but they each offer a different kind of stillness. It depends on what story you want to tell.

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

Blue Frontier Safari is more remote — focusing on the Great Barrier Reef, dunes and rainforests of K'Gari. There's lots of iconic and beautiful wildlife. Manta rays, dingoes, turtles, thousands of other marine life.

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

East Coast Elements is more about that dynamic movement and human connection across the Gold Coast and Northern Rivers regions. From surfers, chefs, rivers, helicopters — and of course capturing breaching humpback whales.

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

The Invitation to See Differently

Finally, what do you hope guests carry home with them?

Most importantly, a quieter mind and a deeper appreciation - for landscapes, wildlife, natural-driven elements. A stronger connection to place.

And maybe one or two images that bring them back to a moment they’ll never forget.
