In the late afternoon, 21 Nettleton goes quiet. High above the Clifton tidal pools, where the mountain cliffs meet the Atlantic, the house known as "the Castle" by Cape Town locals feels suspended between two horizons.
Inside, the light softens and the artworks come forward — pieces drawn from the Jankowitz Family Trust Collection, arranged with intention by curator and art advisor Hamzeh Alfarahneh.
It takes only a few moments in his company to understand that Hamzeh's work is not about decoration, but connection. Here stories of Southern Africa sit in conversation with the broader currents of the Global Majority — artists from Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Latin America, and their diasporas whose voices are reshaping contemporary culture.
Cape Town, with its layered history and fiercely creative communities, is a city where these conversations come alive.
For our first Reveling African Journal, we spent an afternoon with Hamzeh to understand how he reads this landscape - and how he invites others into it with such clarity and care.

“”
Cape Town's art world is often described as polished — home to some of the continent's most well known and blue chip galleries and institutions. But the foundation is grassroots: built by artists and community members who created infrastructure where none existed.
"Cape Town's ecosystem was built on audacity," Hamzeh says.

You feel that determination everywhere:
In studios hidden above streets of everyday commerce
In galleries holding space for emerging voices
In project spaces where uncomfortable and necessary conversations unfold
Through collaborations that stretch across continents
What makes the Cape Town Art Trail compelling is Hamzeh's deep, lived understanding of these layers. He's spent years building relationships with the artists and spaces that shape the city's cultural pulse.
A body of work that has shaped his understanding of the art world is Penny Siopis' Shame series. The Shame Paintings were Penny's reaction to the Truth and Reconciliation Committee where she wanted to explore the feelings of the nation after the history of apartheid.

"When I'm hosting," he says, "I want to know what draws someone in, what questions they bring. That shapes where we go and who we spend time with."
Hamzeh sees art as a way to understand the world, and he believes anyone can engage with it. Some people need guidance, but everyone's naturally curious. His approach is to create conversation with each guest—a shared exploration of place, people and art.
He often begins with instinct. Stand in front of a work and pay attention to what happens in those first few seconds: the pull, the hesitation, the detail that catches your eye. Only then does he introduce context — adding layers slowly, so the work becomes intriguing rather than overwhelming.
Through moments like these, guests learn to trust their own responses.
Art unlocks its potential, becoming a universal language.

Galleries show the final, polished reveal, but an artist's studio is where the opportunity breathes.
"Studios are spaces of experimentation," Hamzeh says. "They're where you see the thinking — the play, the frustration, the breakthroughs."
On the Cape Town Art Trail, guests may enter studios where canvases lean against walls, notes are taped to windows, and materials scatter across tables. Artists speak candidly about process: what sparked an idea, where a series is heading, or what remains unresolved.
Together with Hamzeh, we designed the Cape Town Art Trail as a deeply personal journey for those seeking a unique artistic immersion rooted in history.
The day often begins over coffee, meeting Hamzeh at a local café, where he learns what draws you in before guiding you through Cape Town's art world. From there, the trail moves through the city's cultural fabric - independent galleries, established spaces, and behind-the-scenes studio visits - shaped entirely around the guest's interests and pace.
No two trails are alike. Some linger with sculpture. Others follow painting, photography, or conceptual work. What remains constant is the intention: to offer meaningful access, careful framing, and time with the people reshaping Cape Town's cultural landscape.
It ends at 21 Nettleton, high above Clifton, where the Jankowitz Family Trust Collection offers a final immersion into Southern African and Global Majority practices.
In Hamzeh's hands, and through Reveling's lens, art becomes a meeting place and an extraordinary way to understand the stories of this city.

As the light shifts through the high windows of 21 Nettleton, Hamzeh reflects on what lies ahead.
"I want to keep building opportunities - here and elsewhere. South Africa should be part of the global conversation. There is so much innovation that deserves to be seen."
His vision is grounded, not grandiose. It lives in the relationships he nurtures, the collections he shapes, and the communities he advocates for.
For him, access is not a luxury. It is a responsibility.
